Runaway production is a phrase commonly used by Hollywood film and television production labor to describe the outsourcing of production work to foreign locations.
Runaway film production has been with us for over 100 years. Runaway production emerged in California between 1909 and 1920, driven mainly by geographic realism. In the late 1960s, runaway productions in Europe started to decline partly owing to concerns over cost-effectiveness and unions’ campaign against shooting abroad. Because of the rapid development of visual technology since the 1990s, runaway production has been less driven by geographic realism than previously.
Economic runaways from Hollywood over the last couple of decades have fanned out to locations in many different countries. Emerging satellite film-production locations in other parts of the world, such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania, Mexico, and South Africa.
